Our Books and DVDs Make Great Gifts!
By Michelle Mather
The readers of this blog have found us through many different ways; google searches, podcasts, news stories, etc. Many of our blog readers aren’t aware that we have published 7 books and produced 5 DVDs, so today I thought I’d describe our books and DVDs and suggest that if you are looking for a gift idea, please consider one of our items. Right now we are offering free shipping within Canada and the U.S.
The first book we published was The Renewable Energy Handbook for Homeowners by William Kemp in 2003. Bill has revised and updated this book twice now, and it is now called “The Renewable Energy Handbook.” It is a big book, 8″ by 10″ and almost 500 pages in length! The Renewable Energy Handbook is North America’s leading guide to reducing your electrical demands through energy efficiency, and integrating clean, green, renewable energy into your life. From solar panels, to wind turbines, batteries, generators, inverters and how to tie it all together, this book is the ultimate guide for someone contemplating a move to the country or the adoption of renewable energy technologies into their home. This is the book that Cam and I wished had been available when we first moved to our off-grid home. It wasn’t available and so that’s why we had to publish it! It retails for $29.95 which is a bargain given its size.
Our next book was “$mart Power: An urban guide to renewable energy and energy efficiency.” We wanted to provide a book that showed urbanites how to build or renovate to make their dwellings energy efficient, as well as make suggestions for the use of renewables in an urban environment. Normally $mart Power retails for $29.95, but right now we are offering copies of this great book for only $10 each.
After tackling the topics of renewable energy and energy efficiency as they related to homes, Bill became interested in transportation issues. First he studied the process of making high quality biodiesel that he could use in his diesel automobile. After working with both homebrewers as well as university researchers, he designed a home-scale biodiesel processing unit and wrote the book “Biodiesel: Basics and Beyond.” This book, which has been used as a textbook by college and university students, is highly regarded in the biodiesel-making community. It retails for $29.95.
Still on the topic of transportation, Bill became interested in the concept of a hybrid electric car. He bought a Mazda Miata, removed the gasoline-powered engine and installed not only an electric motor but also a biodiesel-powered generator that could charge up the batteries when required. He called his car (and the subsequent book) “The Zero-Carbon Car” and shared not only his concerns around the sustainability of our current transportation modes but also provided step-by-step instructions for anyone wanting to follow his lead. Usually “The Zero-Carbon Car: Building the Car the Auto Industry Can’t Get Right” retails for $24.95 but right now it is on sale for only $10.00 a copy. It would make a great gift for any automobile or electric car enthusiast in your life.
Our fifth book is called “Thriving During Challenging Times: The Energy, Food and Financial Independence Handbook.” Cam wrote this book to provide a roadmap to help readers navigate the uncertain times that we find ourselves in. He looks at the converging challenges of Peak Oil, the economic collapse and climate change and offers suggestions for how we can all prepare for the future. Cam had been presenting workshops on this topic for many years and finally wrote the book to share his ideas with a larger audience. Mother Earth News recommends this book on their website. It retails for $19.95.
The next book that we published is Cam’s gardening book called “The All You Can Eat Gardening Handbook.” Cam had produced a gardening DVD a few years previously and many of the folks who purchased that DVD requested that he share his extensive knowledge in book form. Unlike other gardening books that are full of intimidating charts and schedules, Cam takes a very practical approach to gardening. Whether you’ve got a small city lot, a typical suburban backyard or a large country property The All You Can Eat Gardening Handbook is the tool you need to get motivated to start growing healthy, local, inexpensive vegetables today! It is the perfect gift for the gardener on your shopping list and retails for $24.95.
Our seventh and most recent book is called “Little House Off the Grid: Our Family’s Journey to Self-Sufficiency.” In our book Cam and I share the story of our move from the city to our off-grid home in the country. There have been many, many challenges over the years, but also many triumphs, and we share it all, the good and the bad. This book retails for $19.95.
We have also produced 5 DVDs over the years. “Living With Renewable Energy” shows a tour of Bill Kemp’s off-grid home, as well as our off-grid home. It also includes an interview with Bill Kemp. “Biodiesel Basics” is the companion video to our biodiesel book and provides step-by-step instructions on how to make high-quality biodiesel at your home or farm. “Home-Scale Wind Turbine Installation” shows the many steps involved in installing your own home-scale wind turbine. Cam and I filmed this DVD at our home as we struggled to understand the less-than-helpful manual that came with our wind turbine. As mentioned earlier, we also have a DVD called “Grow Your Own Vegetables” in which Cam shows viewers the seven easy steps to turn your yard into your very own produce department. These four DVDs all retail for $19.95.
The final DVD is called “The Renewable Energy Workshop on DVD” and is a video of the complete proceedings of the Wind World/Solar World Conference put on at the Mississauga Living Arts Center, attended by over 1,000 renewable energy enthusiasts. The conference was conducted by Bill Kemp and is a complete video guide to renewable energy. It takes you step-by-step through the “eco-nomic” path to integrating renewable energy into your life. There is 6 hours of material on 4 DVDs for $29.95.
If you go to our website; http://aztext.com/howtoorder.cfm you’ll notice that we offer package deals of the various books and DVDs. We even offer our entire library of 7 books for only $142.95 which is a discount of more than 20% off the normal retail prices.
This holiday season, please consider giving our books or DVDs as gifts. They are written and produced using renewable energy and we print our books here in Canada. If you order before December 11, we will ship your items within Canada or the U.S. for free!
