Life Off-the-Grid

A Blogiversary of Sorts

By Michelle Mather

Five years ago on November 14, 2006, Cam wrote his very first blog post. We started a blog over at, which is the official site for our publishing business, Aztext Press. As Cam wrote on that first blog;

We decided we have so many new and exciting things happening, a blog would allow our website users to keep up-to-date on where we’re at, where we’ve been and where we’re going.

Renewable energy is exploding into people’s consciousness and as we begin to understand the limits to the planet, our message of following the correct path in terms of energy efficiency first, then implementing renewable energy is being embraced by many of our readers.

This blog is going to be maintained by a number of people involved with Aztext Press. This includes Bill and Lorraine Kemp, authors of our various books on renewable energy, and the publishers  Michelle and Cam Mather. Both families live off-the-electricity grid, so have a first hand perspective on living with renewable energy.

We’ll also keep you posted on upcoming books and projects we’re working on.

We hope you find some helpful information and keep in touch with us here at the blog. Thanks for dropping by!

Well, we never did manage to convince Bill or Lorraine to write any posts but that didn’t stop Cam (and occasionally, me) to share our experiences, not only with living off the grid, but on so many other topics! When I scroll through the list of blog titles over at, I am a little overwhelmed by the range of topics that we have covered! Not only did we discuss our new books, DVDs and other projects, we shared our gardening experiences, our childhood memories and our favourite movies, books and music. When I scan the titles of the blogs I see everything from killer flying squirrels, to The Talking Heads, to Prozac mentioned!

It wasn’t until February of 2009 that I began posting Cam’s blogs on our wordpress site (to make it easy for readers to subscribe to the blog), and then in February of 2010, we began posting our blog on our new site, The blog found another home in August of 2010 when Mother Earth News magazine asked Cam to begin contributing to their website. He started off as one of many bloggers under the banner “The Happy Homesteader” but eventually Mother Earth News gave Cam his very own blog called “Homesteading in Canada.” In fact, to find Cam’s blog on the Mother Earth News website you just need to key in “” and you’ll be taken directly to it!

I’m not sure why, but the busiest day on the wordpress site was April 13 of this year. We posted an entry called “Resurrecting the Spirit of Independence” and there were 226 views that day. Apparently the idea of independence resonates with a lot of people!

Here are the top 5 most read posts;

  1. Are Cell Phones the New Cigarettes? – 2,247 views
  2. Feeling Guilty on a Day Off – 2,232 views
  3. Anarchists Need to Spend Some Time Growing Food
  4. LED Lights Save Christmas
  5. An Interview with Cam in Harrowsmith Country Life Magazine

We’d like to thank you for reading our blog, for all of the wonderful comments that you have left over the past few years, and for supporting our work by buying our books and DVDs. There’s a donation tab at the site where you can show your support and appreciation for this blog and we’d like to thank those of you who have so generously made a donation!

Cam has a few posts lined up for the next little while, including one about batteries, which was suggested by one of our readers. If you have an idea for a topic that you’d like Cam to cover, leave a comment or send us a message and we’ll do our best. Happy Blogiversary!
